WANTED
A design for a t-shirt for the College of Library and Information Science.

Guidelines:

May include: 1) College of Library and Information Science, 2) LIS, 3) University of Hawaii, 4) a (picture/text) reference to librarianship.
Design should be monochromatic (one ink color).
Design must fit 12”x 15 or smaller-think shirt dimensions.
Information to include with submission: Your name (will be used for Hui Dui/not released during submission/voting), contact (email or phone), specify if your submission is front/back of shirt.

New Student Orientation

Before school starts in the Fall and Spring we hold a New Student Orientation to give the incoming students information about the upcoming semester and welcome them to the LIS Program. The Orientation is usually held the Tuesday before school starts, and includes information on student organizations, registration information including advising sessions, and a catered lunch.

At the end of each fall and spring we organize a formal party for the graduating members of the LIS Program - we give awards, speeches, have great food and enjoy great company. Join us this semester as we celebrate the conclusion of their hard work as students, and their beginning as professionals!

We encourage LIS students to become officers of Hui Dui! Usually nominations are called for at the end of the Fall semester and a general election is held. The current president will announce the results, and the incoming officers will have a chance to meet with the current officers to go over the orders of business before the semester concludes. The four main office are President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary - however, we can have multiple offices if we have more than four people!

While the election is held only once a year, we encourage students who want to participate to contact us anytime if you would like to join - it is certainly possible to hold a mini-election, or for students to join for non-office-holding positions.

Lending Library

Hui Dui maintains a "lending library" of LIS textbooks, free of charge, for student use.

Now that it is the end of the semester, if you wish to return your lending library items, please leave them at the BHSD reference desk for either Brett or Neneng. We don't have to be there at the time, but the items can be funneled to us.

Due to the closing of Bilger 319, the Lending Library is temporarily closed.
Because there is no room in our temporary home, POST 318B, the Lending Library books are in storage. Storage is difficult to access, so students who currently have lending library books checked out will need to hold onto the through the end of the semester.

Supporting the LIS Students

In order to provide services to the students, we are constantly working to raise money. Our snack sales and printer paper in the classroom are designed to pay for themselves, and this system is a wonderful way to provide these daily services for the LIS students!

The two main events - the New Student orientation and the Graduation Dinner - on the other hand, take up a great deal of our funds, and we have to raise money throughout the semester in order to be able to put these on year after year. In order to raise large amounts of money, we have fundraising events like bake sales and online auctions.

UH-LIS Mugs

In cooperation with ALA-SC and ASIST, Hui Dui is selling plastic-lined thermal travel mugs as a fundraiser! It keeps
your beverages hot or cold and sports the UH-LIS logo. Proceeds will help fund brown bags and other professional
panels, the graduation dinner, and other LIS social events. Prices are one for $10 and two for $18. Talk to Brett, Neneng, Shelley, or Mariko, or you can e-mail hudui@hawaii.edu if you're interested.

Bookmarks

There I was, reading in the independent café, drinking a succulent cappucino from my superior, portable and reusable ALA mug. Suddenly, I had to set my book down for a moment of reflection. I reached for the ecologically unfriendly napkin to keep my place – but then, I remembered that in my pocket I had a long-lasting, reusable bookmark – aesthetically pleasing, and made locally with tender care by my LIS friends. Surely, I thought, this beaded bookmark is the perfect companion for the ALA mug – supporting the LIS students, encouraging the good work in literacy, and making the world a bit greener. Some other things also struck me: it’s a great stocking-stuffer at a small price! Only $6.00 for this beautiful piece of handmade technology! Just think of the headache you can spare yourself by buying one or more as presents – for those nieces, nephews, or aunties whose gift needs usually make you bite your lower lip in consternation. And just think of your contribution to the LIS program and the world! Remember: only $6.00 each! If you want to make the world an even slightly better place, please contact one of your personal (and reasonably personable) representatives: Shelley, Mariko, Neneng or Brett.

Rummage Sale

The Hui Dui board would like to thank everyone who contributed items to the rummage sale at East-West Center. In only two short hours we raised 200+ dollars thanks to your contributions and purchases! This will greatly help to defray our expenses for the upcomingNew Student Orientationand other events!

Suggestion Box

If you have suggestions for the LIS department - say, about Bilger, classes, or whatever it may be - send them our way! During the year, Hui Dui will forward your suggestions at the faculty meetings, but if there is something that should be addressed more quickly we can forward the suggestion sooner. You can give us your suggestions 2 ways:

LIS Student Suggestions (Updated 11/18/08):

6) When will LIS offer the LIS 700v Thesis Research class? I know several people are interested but no one seems to know when that course is offered. Thanks!

Response from Dr. Andrew Wertheimer:
Usually I try to explain about this at Orientation, but I know that there was a lot of information then. Basically, LIS 700 is not a class per se, but is credit while working on a thesis. For more on doing a thesis, read the "Plan A section" at

Your adviser can help explain this. You are welcome to switch advisers to the faculty member who might be able to supervise your thesis. As the website explains, you do have to pass a research methods course before being able to propose a subject. We didn't have enough students interested the last time we offered LIS 695 Seminar in Research in Librarianship, but will try again in a few years. If you are interested NOW, your adviser can help you select an alternative graduate research methods course as a substitute (which would obviously count towards your 42-credit load).

In the past decade we've only had one student do the Plan A approach. It is a lot of work and you have to be self-driven, but the faculty encourage students to consider this if they are good writers and have a research question they want to explore.

5) Please, can we get working wi-fi consistently administered in here?

Response from Dr. Andrew Wertheimer:
If you have any technical problems with wi-fi or the computers, please contact the ICS Lab folks directly.
ics327@yahoo.com I will send them a reminder too.

Addendum 11/18/08: I just checked with the ICS lab team, and was told that the wi-fi was working. It is somewhat hidden as a security option, so you do have to create the connection (rather than simply pulling it down from a list of wifi options). This should be automatic though once you've done this once. Hope that helps.

4) What is the "LIS" network password in Bilger 319? Can this info be distributed to everyone somehow?

Response from Dr. Andrew Wertheimer:
Are you asking about wireless or the standalone computers in Bilger? The computers should be OK with a guest account, no? We can't post passwords or send them via e-mail because it would be a security concern for ICS, which operates the lab. ICS also doesn't want to distribute the admin password, so people don't reconfigure the computers. They spend quite a bit of time checking labs for different bugs with specialized software, so they don't want us adding or removing software.

3) The light above the back right table in the classroom is flickering. Every time I sit at that table I get epilepsy. It is very distracting and makes it hard to focus during class, can the light be replaced?

2) Today, I came into BIL 319 early to print something off the computers, and it seems that the computers are not connected to the printer. This was a problem last semester too, and it would be prudent to get DNS in here to fix them soon. Also Firefox was recently installed? and it is needing some updates? It is shameful to have such "good" computers (for LIS use only) that are not in proper working order. These computers are supposed to be a convenience, but I find myself going out of my way to AVOID using them because they have so many issued.

As far as the printer goes, usually the problem is that the default printer is OneNote. If you change the printer to Dell it will usually work after that.

1)Internships NEED to be available in the summer sessions.

Response from Dr. Andrew Wertheimer:
We will offer an internship (LIS 690) option this summer. This is our first time to do so. We will be posting details soon. Students will be able to take it any time in the summer as one of the 4 courses one can take in the summer. We'll be posting more details later.

What is Hui Dui?

Hui Dui is the name of the student body of the Library and Information Science Program at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. All registered LIS students are automatically members of this organization. "Hui" is the Hawaiian word for organization; "Dui" is the phonetic spelling of Melvil Dewey's name (among other things, Dewey was an advocate of spelling reform). Hui Dui officers work to provide various support and services to the LIS students.

What We Do

Hui Dui officers develop their leadership skills by representing the students of LIS. They attend faculty meetings to provide a voice for the student body, and help themselves and their fellow students form a collegial network of friendship and professional support that can extend beyond the MLISc degree. They plan the New Student Orientation to introduce and integrate incoming students into the program, and give the Graduation Dinner to celebrate the achievements of the LIS graduates as they go out into the world.

How We Do It

The officers and students of Hui Dui prepare themselves for their careers by supporting their efforts independent of the program. They rely on themselves to raise funds for their activities and celebrations. Once-a-semester fundraisers provide the bulk of the funds, which provide for the two main events, the Orientation and Graduation Dinner, while ongoing activities like snack sales and printer paper are self-supporting by charging a minimal amount.
